At the beginning of the tournament the participants are to pay the buy-in and are given the certain number of special game chips. These chips do not have value of cash. It is forbidden to use real cash during the poker tournaments. As usual the amount of the starting chips is equal to the size of the buy-in. In some poker tournaments the gamblers have the chance to use the option of buy-back or re-buy, which means that it is permitted to buy extra chips during the tournament and proceed to play. The pot in the poker tournaments is made up of all buy-ins, though, some other investments may be involved, for instance the sponsorship or the entrance receipts from viewers. The poker tournaments in which there are no buy-ins are known as the free rolls. The tournament always finishes as soon as all the players but one left the hand. Sometimes the game can be finished by the consensus of the last gamblers in the hand. In such case the pot is usually divided depending to the in-game chips of each player. There exist various methods to pay off the prize in the tournament. At some poker tournaments the certain prizes are determined for each placing. At others the participants are paid out in accordance with the percentage chart in which the percentages are defined based on the total number of the participants.

It is possible to separate all tournaments into the single-table and multi-table competitions. In the single-table tournaments (known as STT) the maximum quantity of players at one table is nine and the tournament is played at only one table. Usually STTs start when all the gamblers at the table occur but not at the defined time, that is why they are also called the sit-and-go (SNG) tournaments.

Speaking about the multitable tournaments they are played with hundreds of poker players. Usually there are several rounds in such competitions. Initially the satellite games take place that are the entering competitions before the most important event. The buy-in sizes in the satellites are as a rule quite low, for instance 1/50 of the buy-in size at the major poker event. These days the mix of the SNGs and multi-tables is becoming more widespread.

Poker tournaments are either open (for all players) or invitational (only invited players can take part).

Most or the tournaments are player with only one variant of community or stud poker, such as Holdem and Omaha poker, Seven-card High and Seven card Hi Lo stud.
